New Painting of Indio, California

12” x 12” Oil painting of Indio, CA

In 2020 during the height of Covid I moved to the California desert town of Indio. Since moving here I have spent some time exploring my new area. I am currently working on a series of paintings of Indio and the painting pictured is the first one I have completed.

The painting of Indio pictured above is of northern Indio. Northern Indio has shopping centers and housing complexes and it also has large expanses of empty desert with large mountains behind it. Much of the rest of the town is the same.

Indio is known for hosting the Coachella and Stagecoach music concerts. The concerts happen in the spring right before all of the snow birds leave for the season. During the summer the town quiets down until fall when the snow birds return.

The painting of Indio can be purchased at Wendybsstudio90264 on Etsy.

The Beauty of the Desert

La Quinta Canvas Print

One day I took a drive up to the hills in La Quinta to an area called The Cove. It was just before the sun began to set and I went for a short hike. The landscape was beautiful and full of hiking trails. Just beyond this point is an oasis like area with picnic tables. A great place to spend the day.

Lake Havasu Digital Download

On the border between California and Arizona is Lake Havasu. Some friends of mine rented a house boat and we spent a few days on the lake. The scenery is unusual but stunning. I was able to photograph much of the area by boat. A great place to vacation with the family.

Sometimes Small is Better

Pepper Mill Original Oil Painting

I usually enjoy painting on large canvas but last week I decided to go small. A friend gave me a silver pepper mill and I thought it would be a perfect subject for a small painting. I used a 5” x 7” canvas panel board and loved how it turned out.

This little painting would be a great addition to your kitchen decor or to give as a gift. It is available at our new site on Etsy dedicated to original oil paintings by artist Wendy Brown. It can be purchased at WMB Paintings on Etsy.

Tootsie Pop Oil Painting

Tootsie Pop Oil Painting

Every once in a while I want to paint something fun. This small painting was done last year right after Halloween. I bought some candy just in case trick-or-treaters came to my door. This was one of the left over treats. I decided I wanted to paint it as I love painting big things small and small things big.

Another reason for choosing this subject was it reminded me of going out on Halloween and having fun. While I no longer eat very much candy, this use to be one of my favorites.

The original painting can be purchased at wendybsstudio90264 on Etsy.

Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor Original Oil Painting

When I decided to paint this portrait of Elizabeth Taylor I tried to think of a woman who made an impact on Hollywood and whose career was extraordinary. Elizabeth Taylor came to mind. She was talented, elegant and full of controversy.

She began acting as a young woman and continued for most of her life. She is a Hollywood legend and will be remembered for a long time coming.

If you would like to purchase this original art piece you can find it at Wendybsstudio90264 on Etsy.

Clint Eastwood Original Oil Painting

Clint Eastwood Original Oil Painting

I am into all things retro. I think it comes from my love of history. Last week I decided I wanted to do a portrait and I wanted to embrace the colors of the 1970’s. The only thing missing from this portrait is the avocado green.

Clint Eastwood his Dirty Harry character are symbolic of that time period. I love his side burns and hairdo. The expression on his face which is so Clint Eastwood. In those movies he plays a rogue policeman, but he gets the job done. Classic Hollywood.

Summer Peaches

Summer Peaches

Last week I began a small painting series that celebrates summer. It started off with flip flops and this week summer peaches. I love doing small paintings. It gives me a chance to complete a painting in a few hours and hones in on needed skill sets for doing larger ones.

Peaches always remind me of my grandmother and her family. Many of her brothers and sisters grew peaches and some for a living. They would arrive with boxes full. My grandmother would then make them into pies and peach cobbler and sometimes jam. She was a great baker and she is the one who taught me all of my baking skills.

A more modern take on peaches is to grill them on the barbecue. If you have not done this, you should. They taste fantastic, especially topped on a bowl of ice cream.

Wonderful memories of summers spent with family is why I chose to do this painting. The painting is 9’ x 12’ and has been done on a linen panel board. It is available for purchase at Wendybsstudio90264 on Etsy.

Flip Flops

“Flip Flops”

I am originally from the Seattle area and because it was rainy most of the year I never wore flip flops. In 2017 I moved to California and ended up in Los Angeles selling my art at the beach. In LA I wore flip flops all summer. They are the easiest shoe to wear when you are in the sand everyday.

I recently moved to the desert and find myself wearing flip flops at the pool. So for me, they are a California thing. Tonight I decided to pay homage to the shoes I never thought I would wear.

My new painting is 8” x 10” oil on canvas and will be available for purchase soon at Wendybsstudio90264 on Etsy.

The Painting Process

A few weeks ago I finished a painting of an intersection on Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California. The painting was done from a photograph I took on one of my trips to Hollywood. I enjoy painting the unexpected or the mundane over the “touristy” spots. In my mind this painting represents the “real” Hollywood over what most people see in the media.

The medium I use currently is oil and I paint on stretched canvas or panel board. I begin each painting by coating the blank canvas with a color medium in tone. This assures that none of the canvas will be left blank and it makes painting much easier to have a base coat.

I then take a paint brush and a darker color and sketch in only the main shapes to assure that the perspective and dimensions are correct. I can easily paint over any mistakes at this time.

I then begin filling in some of the shadows or darker colors.

Slowly adding color elements of the painting begin to come into view. At this stage I usually paint the sky and some of the main objects of the painting.

Continuing to work on the main shapes, I fill in colors without worrying about detail yet.

Once the main colors have all been places, I work on the details of the painting until I decide it is finished.

I had a lot of fun on this painting. It took me about 4 days working several hours each day. I like to let some of the layers dry before continuing on, especially once I start on the details.

If you would like to purchase this painting it is available at Wendybsstudio90264 on Etsy.
